When someone in your city searches for what you do — "best pizza near me," "plumber in [your town]," "hair salon open now" — do you show up? If you're not appearing in the Google Maps "local pack" (those three business results that appear at the top of local searches), you're invisible to a huge chunk of potential customers.
The good news: local SEO is one of the most impactful things you can do for your business, and most of it is completely free. This checklist covers the 10 things every local business should have in place to maximize visibility on Google Maps and local search results.
The Local SEO Checklist
1. Claim and Fully Complete Your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the single most important local SEO asset you have. Go to business.google.com and either claim your existing listing or create a new one. Then fill out every single field:
- Business name (exactly as it appears in real life)
- Address and service area
- Phone number
- Website URL
- Business hours (including holiday hours)
- Business category (be specific — "Italian Restaurant" beats "Restaurant")
- Business description (use local keywords naturally)
- Products or services list
2. Choose the Right Primary Category
Your primary category tells Google what type of business you are, and it's one of the strongest ranking signals in local SEO. Be as specific as possible. Instead of "Contractor," choose "General Contractor" or "Kitchen Remodeler." You can add secondary categories too — use them to cover all the services you offer.
3. Add High-Quality Photos
Businesses with photos receive 42% more direction requests and 35% more website clicks than those without. Add photos of your storefront, interior, team, products, and work. Upload a minimum of 10-15 photos to start, and add new ones regularly. Google sees fresh photos as a signal that your business is active.
4. Get Your Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP) Consistent Everywhere
Google cross-references your business information across the web. If your address is listed differently on your website, Yelp, Facebook, and your Google profile, it creates confusion — and Google penalizes inconsistency. Make sure your business name, address, and phone number are identical across every platform.
Check and update your listings on: Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing Places, TripAdvisor, Angi, and any industry-specific directories.
5. Collect Google Reviews (And Respond to All of Them)
Reviews are a major ranking factor and the #1 trust signal for local searches. The quantity, recency, and quality of your reviews all matter.
The simplest way to get more reviews: create a direct review link in your Google Business Profile dashboard and send it to every satisfied customer. Text it. Email it. Print it as a QR code near your register.
And respond to every review — good and bad. A professional response to a negative review actually builds trust. It shows you're engaged and you care.
6. Add Local Keywords to Your Website
Your website needs to signal to Google that you serve a specific location. Make sure your city and service area appear naturally in your page titles, headings, and body copy. Create a dedicated "About Us" or "Service Area" page that mentions the neighborhoods, cities, or regions you serve.
Example: instead of "We offer plumbing services," write "We offer plumbing services throughout Austin, Round Rock, and Cedar Park."
7. Create Location-Specific Pages (If You Serve Multiple Areas)
If you serve customers in multiple cities or neighborhoods, create a dedicated page for each location. Each page should include unique content — not just swapped city names — describing your services in that area, any local connections, and ideally an embedded Google Map.
These "local landing pages" are one of the most effective (and underused) local SEO tactics available to small businesses.
8. Build Local Citations
A citation is any mention of your business name, address, and phone number on the web — even without a link. The more consistent citations you have on authoritative sites, the more Google trusts your business is real and established.
Start by submitting your business to:
- Yelp
- Apple Maps
- Bing Places
- BBB (Better Business Bureau)
- Chamber of Commerce directory
- Industry-specific directories (e.g., Houzz for home services, Healthgrades for medical)
9. Post Regular Updates to Your Google Business Profile
Most business owners set up their Google profile and forget about it. But Google treats your profile like a social channel — it rewards active profiles. Post updates at least once a week: announcements, offers, new services, or photos. Even a short post signals to Google that your business is alive and active.
10. Make Sure Your Website Is Mobile-Friendly and Fast
Most local searches happen on mobile — someone's standing on the street, driving by, or sitting on their couch searching for something nearby. If your website loads slowly or doesn't work well on a phone, you'll lose that customer immediately.
Test your site at pagespeed.web.dev (free, from Google). Aim for a mobile score above 70. If it's low, talk to a developer about image optimization, caching, and hosting improvements.
How Long Until You See Results?
Local SEO isn't instant, but it's faster than traditional SEO. Most businesses see measurable improvement in local rankings within 4-8 weeks of implementing these steps consistently. Review volume and recency have the most immediate impact — start there.
Work through this checklist methodically. Check off each item. Then revisit quarterly to make sure everything stays up to date.
